5 summer desserts to get your kids to eat fruit

2017-06-19 TimeOutShanghaiFamily

Is getting your child to eat fruit a constant struggle? If it is, here are five fruit-based desserts that might just convince them that it's not so bad after all. And if your kid does love fruit, even better...

Pineapple and Nutella pancakes

at Papito's Pancakes

While new restaurant Papito's Pancakes specialises in Serbian takes on savoury and sweet crepes and makes a range of great-tasting dishes, we particularly like the sweet-and-sour combination going on in its Pineapple and Nutella pancakes. Ideal for those looking for something tangy and tropical.

Price 35RMB.

Papito's Pancakes The Market, 280 Aomen Lu, near Changhua Lu, Putuo district (187 1791 4550). Open 10am-8pm daily.

Pineapple cakes and strawberries on shaved ice

at Qimin Organic Hotpot

This dessert at hotpot restaurant Qimin Organic Hotpot from the team behind Green & Safe arrives as a large bowl filled with four main ingredients: organic strawberries, a scoop of vanilla ice cream, a slice of Sunny Hill’s pineapple cake and drizzles of honeycomb, condensed milk and mint leaves, all atop a heap of shaved ice. Refreshingly light, this is one for parents and kids to share.

Price 38RMB (small); 48RMB (large).

Qimin Organic Hotpot Third Floor, 191 Hengshan Lu, near Yongjia Lu, Xuhui District (5465 9195). Open 11am-2pm, 5pm-2am Mon-Fri; 11am-2am Sat-Sun.

The 'Coconut'

at Alan Wong's Shanghai

A little more grown-up-looking but just as family-friendly is The ‘Coconut’ at Alan Wong’s Shanghai. The masters behind this playful dessert imitate its namesake fruit by moulding a light coconut sobert into a dark chocolate shell. It tastes even better than it looks.

Price 98RMB plus 15 percent surcharge.

Alan Wong's Shanghai Second Floor, Shanghai Centre, 1376 Nanjing Xi Lu, near Xikang Lu, Jingan district (6289 0618). Open 11.30am-2pm; 3-5pm; 5.30-11pm daily.

PBJ

at The Commune Social

Lining the plate of this creation from Kim Melvin is a sweet puddle of raspberry jam, topped with seasonal fresh berries and super-tasty peanut clumps made from white chocolate, thin wafers and peanut butter. A salted caramel peanut sugar crisp supports a block of peanut ice cream and a quenelle of blueberry sorbet. The final touch: a sprinkle of frozen mixed berries. The perfect dessert for any season really (but especially for summer), from The Commune Social.

Price 62RMB.

The Commune Social 511 Jiangning Lu, near Kangding Lu, Jingan district (6047 7638). Open midday-2.30pm, 6-10.30pm Tue-Fri; midday-3pm Sat-Sun; 6-10.30pm Sat.

M's Very Famous Pavlova

at M on the Bund

Although its origins remain unclear (Australia? New Zealand?) in theory, the pavlova is relatively easy to make, but it’s also wildly hard to perfect, and M on the Bund's version is the epitome of a successful pav. It scales ambitious heights, presented as a gleaming tower of tropical fruits piled atop a fluffy cloud-like interior and a magically crunchy meringue crust. Although it looks like a special treat, this dessert is one that should be eaten often and with gusto.

Price 108RMB plus 10 percent surcharge.

M on the Bund Seventh Floor, Five on the Bund, 20 Guangdong Lu, near Zhongshan Dong Yi Lu, Huangpu district (6350 9988). Open 11.30am-2.30pm Mon-Fri, 11.30am-5pm Sat-Sun, 6-10.30pm daily.
